Common Skin Condition And Their Treatments

Acne Vulgaris

Acne (pimples/zits) is a common skin condition that affects most individuals during their lifetime. Normally, the skin has multiple pores that can get clogged by oil and dead skin cells. This can trigger inflammation and further get infected by bacteria leading to various types of acne lesions. The legions can be small bumps, blackheads, whiteheads, or prominent such as cysts or boils. People can have one or more of these at the same time. Though harmless, they can lead to an unpleasant appearance, due to which patients require some form of treatment to control acne.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory condition characterized by reddish, raised skin lesions with silvery white scales over the body. It can also affect the scalp, nails, and joints. Conditions like winter, alcohol intake, obesity, throat infection can trigger / make psoriasis worse. Psoriasis is diagnosed clinically. However, to confirm the diagnosis your dermatologist may advise a skin biopsy. The treatment options for psoriasis are vast and are chosen by your doctor according to the type and extend of psoriasis and keeping in mind your other medical conditions.

Atopic Dermatitis

When you are having a dry flaky skin with red itchy rashes all over, you may be suffering from Atopic Dermatitis. Commonly seen in children, it can occur at any age. Atopic Dermatitis has a chronic course with periodic flare ups. There usually is a disruption in the skin barrier through which the allergens and irritants enter and cause the itchy rashes. One must note that it is not contagious. An appropriate treatment plan by a dermatologist can help manage the flare ups. A good maintenance routine and a proper skin care will help avoid frequent flare ups of the disease.

Allergic Skin Conditions/ Eczemas

Eczema is a skin condition presenting with red, itchy, cracked, rough rashes over the affected areas. Sometimes, it may present with blisters or may get infected also. Eczema may happen due to internal irritants (atopic dermatitis) or external irritants (Allergic contact dermatitis; eg: allergy to cement, metals, detergents). Find the appropriate treatment for eczemas at Skinessence.

Skin Infection

Fungal infections of the skin (athletes foot/ ringworm/ jock itch) are one of the commonest cases seen in the Dermatology OPD. It can infect the skin, hair, and nail. They usually occur in the area of skin folds like groin, below the breasts, and underarms. Hot humid climate increases the chances of developing a fungal skin infection. These are supposed to be treated under the guidance of the dermatologist. Delf medication with over-the-counter product from pharmacy must be avoided, as most of these creams contain steroids. This can make the rash treatment resistant and very difficult to treat. Usage of very commonly advertised lotion named “Sapat lotion”, must be absolutely avoided as they can cause burns and irritant contact dermatitis and thus further worsening the condition.

Keloid / Hypertrophic Scar

It is a procedure involving a combination of Microneedling along with injections of PRP (platelet rich plasma). It helps induce new collagen production, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, improve skin texture, enhance skin tone, and gives long lasting results.
